Fruit of the Loom or Russell — which polo suits your team?

Both brands sit in our warehouse, both have been printed and embroidered for decades, and both come up in almost every enquiry for team polos. Yet the choice between them comes down to a single question: how long should the polo last — and how often will it be washed?

Fruit of the Loom is the answer to volume. Russell is the answer to wear. Everything else follows from that.

    About the two brands

Fruit of the Loom — the volume classic

Headquartered in the USA, EU logistics via Ireland. The brand lives on standard goods in large runs: a single model, the 65/35 Polo, sits in our warehouse with several thousand pieces. Certified to OEKO-TEX Standard 100, plus membership of the Fair Labor Association.

Russell Europe — the workwear classic

Founded in the USA in 1902; the European line trades as Russell Europe. The focus is on clothing worn on the job: hard-wearing blends, stretch cuts, sizes up to 6XL in the Classic Polycotton. OEKO-TEX Standard 100, Fair Labor Association at group level.

The price gap — and what it means

The cheapest Fruit of the Loom polo starts at €5.87 net, the cheapest Russell at €9.24 net. At 50 pieces that is roughly €143 difference after the volume discount (15 %), before decoration. At 200 pieces (30 %), roughly €472.

That gap is not a verdict on quality but a different calculation: Fruit of the Loom is priced for single use — a town festival, a tournament, a trade-fair stand. Russell is priced for clothing worn five days a week and washed weekly.

So the question is not which polo is cheaper, but how often you replace it. A service team that needs new polos three times a year comes out ahead with the more expensive shirt.

    Our volume discount applies identically to both brands: 3 % from 3 pieces, 10 % from 20, 15 % from 50, 25 % from 100, 30 % from 200, 32 % from 500 — always on the garments, not on the decoration.

Fit and sizes — the difference that saves follow-up questions

Russell offers a fitted stretch line for women and men. Anyone handing polos to a mixed team saves themselves the most common piece of feedback there is: "doesn't fit". Fruit of the Loom has no stretch version in the range we stock.

On size range the two are closer than you would expect: the Russell Classic Polycotton runs from XS to 6XL, the Fruit of the Loom 65/35 Polo from S to 5XL. If you need a single 6XL, only Russell has it — otherwise Fruit of the Loom covers almost the same span.

The clear difference is at the other end: children's sizes from 104 cm exist only at Fruit of the Loom; Russell carries none in the polo range we stock.

    In practice:

    • Fit as a service issue, the occasional very large size → Russell
    • Family event, school, club with children → Fruit of the Loom

Decoration — what works on which polo

Both brands take all our processes. The differences are in the detail:

Embroidery is the first choice for a chest logo on either. On the denser Russell qualities the stitching sits a little calmer because the base fabric gives less — with fine lines in a logo that makes a visible difference.

Screen printing works on both but is rarely the right choice for polos: placket and collar get in the squeegee's way. If screen printing, then on the back.

Transfer printing suits small runs with many colours, such as sponsor logos on club polos.

On blends with a high polyester content — the Fruit of the Loom 65/35 and the Russell Classic Polycotton among them — we use sublimation-blocking films so the base colour does not bleed into the print. That is routine, but it explains why we ask what the garment is for.

    Four cases from practice

    Club festival with 150 helpers

One-off use, many sizes, tight budget. Fruit of the Loom 65/35 Polo, €7.55 net in sizes S to 2XL, several thousand pieces in stock. At 150 pieces the 25 % tier applies.

    Trades business, 12 staff, year-round

Daily wear, weekly wash, embroidered company logo. Russell Hardwearing Polo, XS to 4XL, plus a separate version for 5XL and 6XL. The extra cost pays for itself over the service life.

Hospitality team with women's and men's cuts

Fit is a service matter here. Russell Fitted Stretch, women's and men's from the same colour range — the team looks consistent without anyone being squeezed into a unisex cut.

    School or youth squad

Children's sizes from 104 cm, small budget, often sponsor logos. Fruit of the Loom, the kids' long-sleeve polo or the Ladies' Premium for teenagers.

    Frequently asked questions

Which brand should I choose for team polos if I know neither of them?

Decide on service life. If the polo is for one occasion, take Fruit of the Loom. If it becomes workwear, take Russell. When in doubt, many customers order a single sample of each — that works from one piece.

Where can I buy Fruit of the Loom and Russell polos in Europe with tiered pricing from small quantities?

Both brands are stocked at our warehouse in Berlin, and the tier starts at 3 pieces. From 100 pieces we quote individually — request a bulk order.

    Which polo survives more washes?

Russell is built for it. The Hardwearing and Ultimate Cotton lines use denser fabrics that distort less after washing. Neither manufacturer publishes hard figures on wash-cycle durability — we deliberately give no number here that we cannot support.

Are both brands available in organic quality?

We do not carry a certified organic line from Fruit of the Loom. Russell has the Authentic Eco Polo in the range we stock, at €9.24 net. If you need a certified organic polo, talk to us — then we look across brands.

    How long does delivery take?

Unprinted stock goods ship within 3 to 5 working days. Decorated orders take 7 to 10 working days as standard, 3 to 5 by express. Exact times per process are on our delivery times page.

Can I mix polos from both brands in one order?

Yes. The volume tier is calculated per product, though, not across the whole basket: each polo model reaches its tier with its own quantity across all sizes and colours, and the discount applies to the garments only. On mixed orders we make sure the embroidery looks the same on both materials — where base colours differ sharply, we agree the approach beforehand.

Which sizes do you actually hold in stock?

Russell spans XS to 6XL, Fruit of the Loom XS to 5XL plus children's sizes from 104 cm. Live availability per size and colour is shown on the product page itself — those are real stock figures, not estimates.
